BOISE -- After years of playing the role of backup and situational quarterback, Grant Hedrick is finally getting his chance to run Boise State's high-scoring offense.

The redshirt junior got his first taste Saturday when he took over in the opening minutes after starter Joe Southwick left with an ankle injury. Hedrick threw for 150 yards and rushed for 115 in leading Boise State (5-2, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) to a 34-17 victory over Nevada and sole possession of first place in the Mountain Division.

Southwick was undergoing surgery Monday and is expected to miss at least five weeks -- leaving Hedrick in charge of an offense averaging 39.9 points per game.

Coach Chris Petersen says he's confident in Hedrick's skills and knowledge of the playbook.

Boise State plays at BYU Friday.
