The Boise State Broncos have done just about everything they can all season to put themselves in a position to gain a Bowl Championship Series bowl berth. WAC Commissioner Karl Benson even hired a PR firm to help boost the Broncos opportunity to gain a bid to the BCS, but even that alone wasn't going to get the Broncos to a big time BCS bowl.
It's the field that has helped the Broncos close in on what could be their 2nd bid to a BCS Bowl. While the Broncos have kept winning, everyone else that they've needed to have lose, has lost.
The final big win or loss was Saturday, when Oklahoma State was hammered by Oklahoma 27-0. The Cowboys, who are in the Big 12, seemingly had a Fiesta Bowl bid sealed. All they had to do was beat the Sooners to hold their 12 spot in the BCS.
Since they lost, they'll likely drop out and no longer be in the top 14 to qualify for a BCS berth. Meaning the only Big 12 team that will gain a BCS berth will be Texas, who's more than likely going to be in the National Championship game.
Obviously, the Broncos trip to the Fiesta Bowl still hinges on a lot of games that have yet to be played.
First and foremost, the Broncos have to beat New Mexico State next Saturday to clinch their 2nd straight undefeated season (13-0). Texas must also defeat Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game because if Nebraska wins they'll gain the bid to the Fiesta Bowl because they are the Big 12 Conference champs. In that scenario, Texas would also likely be selected ahead of the Broncos for an at-large BCS bid, leaving Boise State on the outside looking in. There are several other scenarios, but those are clearly the most basic.
And as already said, all this information is what is likely to happen, but there are still decisions to be made and games to be played.
Nonetheless, it should be an interesting final week of the season and by this time a week from tomorrow, Sunday, we'll know just exactly where to expect to travel this holiday season. And more than likely, the Broncos are headed to 'The Valley of the Sun'.
