BOISE -- The Boise State football players will trade in their helmets and shoulder pads for baseball caps and bats on Saturday when they host the 2013 Bronco Football Summer Classic. The event raises money for The First Tee of Idaho, a non-profit organization that helps provide access to the sport of golf for children.

On Thursday, the Broncos held a practice to try and get the hang of a sport that most haven’t played since they were kids themselves.  Understandably, some stood out for their lack of softball talent more than others.

"Definitely Jay Ajayi, he's a phenomenal football player, but as you can see out here, baseball is definitely not his strong point," junior corner Bryan Douglas said.

"Donte Deayon might be the worst player on the field, honestly, and he's probably one of the most athletic people on our team," senior tackle Charles Leno said.

The event, which started six years ago, is a fun way for the Broncos to build team chemistry, while at the same time compete in front of the fans that cheer for them on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium.

"There’s definitely some competitive juices starting to flow, some trash talk," senior quarterback Joe Southwick said.  "We're just looking forward to it, it's going to be a great event as always.  Besides from the game, it's going to be a great chance to see the fans for the first time.  Really the last time before we hit fall camp."

"We love doing stuff like this.  You will always see us doing community service throughout the year, and our coaches really stay on top of us about that," Douglas said.

The 2013 Bronco Football Summer Classic will be played on Saturday, July 13, at Hawks Memorial Stadium.  Gates open at 5 p.m., with a home run derby set to begin at 6 p.m. and the softball game scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased on the Boise Hawks website, or at the stadium box office the night of the game.
