MERIDIAN - (Leaderboard) Boise State junior-to-be Jordan Skyles fired at 1-under 70 at the Idaho State Amateur Championship on Friday, and is the overall leader after Day 1 at the Spurwing Country Club in Meridian.

Skyles blistered through the front nine, birding holes two, three, five, seven and nine and made the turn at 5-under on the day.  But leading by two strokes, the Eagle High-grad battled inclement weather on the back nine.  While temperatures were almost 20-degrees cooler than Thursday's high of 108-degrees, stiff winds presented Skyles with a whole new challenging.

"The first nine holes, it wasn't bad," Skyles said. "That back nine was brutally difficult.  It was into the wind most of the way.  It was playing tough."

Skyles double-bogeyed No. 14, saved bogey by sinking a 20-foot putt on No. 16, then capped his round with his third bogey of the day on No. 18.  Still, Skyles managed to shoot a 70, and was the only golfer in the 144-person field to finish the opening round under par.

"I got off to a great start, which was nice," said Skyles moments after walking off the 18th green.  "I let a few leak away on the back, but overall I was please."

"It's the first round," said Skyles with a smile.  "You can't win it but you can sure lose it."

NOTE: Skyles' college teammate Taeksoo Kyung Kim shot a 2-over and is currently tied for fourth-place ... Idaho golfing legend Joe Malay finished the first round at 9-over and tied for 62nd ... there will be no cut at the tournament ... Play resumes Saturday morning with the Championship Flight teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
