UPDATE: Harper signed an undrafted free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.
UPDATE: Entering the third and final day of the 2013 NFL Draft on Saturday, it seemed like a long shot for Harper to get drafted. In what was considering a down year for top-end talent at runningback, the board was loaded with guys that were deemed mid-to-late round picks.
Over the course of the first 97 picks, only six running backs were selected, leaving a plethora of talent for the final 157 selections. In comparison to Harper, that talent was either younger, went to a bigger school, or avoided injuries throughout his career the way Harper wasn't able to.
Twenty-three total running backs were draft this year, including 17 on Saturday.
Of the 38 running backs that participated at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February, 14 went undrafted. Harper is included in the latter group.
At the moment, Harper has been thrown into the free-agent pool hoping to make a splash. It is unclear when he will land with a team, but usually these things get sorted out a day or two after the draft.
