SPOKANE, Wash.-- For the first time in university history, the Gonzaga men’s basketball team ranked number one Monday in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The team previously held the number two spot and moved to the top of the poll after Indiana and Duke both lost games in the last week.
A group of 64 sports writers and broadcasters across the nation vote in the AP poll. Prior to last week’s move to number two, the highest Gonzaga had ever been in the AP poll was number three back in 2004.
Experts said the ranking doesn’t earn the Bulldogs anything, but they do gain respect for it. The respect could help the team earn a number one seed to the NCAA tournament if they win the WCC tournament next Monday in Las Vegas.
