CALDWELL -- A Caldwell man is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire torched his custom carpentry business this morning.

The Caldwell Fire Department says the fire started just before 5:30 A.m. Thursday at Weymouth Interior Trim. Battalion Chief Brad Carico says the fire started inside and climbed into the attic.

"So, we couldn't put anybody on the roof, because we were uncertain how sound the roof was," said Carico.

And that limited their options on how to attack this fire.

"So, we went to defensive fire, which meant we've had to attack everything from the outside," said Carico.

A police officer woke up the owner, Terry Weymouth, to tell him his business, which he's owned for 25 years, was on fire.

"I just got dressed and came straight down," said Weymouth.

He arrived to find his business still ablaze.

"I'm just amazed at the devastation," said Weymouth.  "The fire marshall say they're looking at everything on the floor, he thinks everything probably collapsed down. It's a really hot fire. The building is probably about 100 years old."

Firefighters now believe the building is a total loss.

Once the fire was extinguished, Weymouth spent the rest of the day sifting through the rubble to see if he could salvage anything.

Weymouth isn't sure what he's going to do next.  He may rebuild, or he may move to another location.

"I don't know where we'll go from here," he said.

Weymouth and a part-time worker are the only two employees.  Both are nearing retirement age, but haven't decided if they'll return to work.

Firefighters told Weymouth the fire probably started on the south side of the building, near the railroad tracks.

Investigators are trying to find the exact cause.
