Some people ask, "What does Tom Scott do?!" Well, when Tom’s not immersed in the local sports scene, he works in Downtown Boise, operating his own local ad firm.
But sports announcing has been in his blood since he was a youngster. Growing up in the Bay Area, he was fascinated by a guy named Jeff Carter-the public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants-who had the privilege of saying Willie Mays' name whenever he came to bat. Next thing you know, 13-year-old Tom was doing PA for an 8th grade basketball tournament, and the rest is history. His involvement in sports in the Treasure Valley can be traced back to 1971, when he first did morning sports reports on KFXD Radio. He later became eminently familiar to local sports fans as public address announcer at Boise State football games from 1974-84 (and basketball games 1973-79).
Tom became a television sportscaster in 1978, with his credits including two seasons as host of Boise State's weekly coach's show and play-by-play duties for live telecasts during the Broncos' national championship season in 1980. He relinquished his stadium announcing duties when he joined KBOI's Paul J. Schneider on the Bronco radio team for the 1985 and 1986 seasons.
After his arrival here at KTVB, Tom teamed with Mark Johnson on BSU telecasts-then with Larry Maneely when the veteran sportscaster returned to KTVB in 1988. Tom has been part of Sunday Sports Extra on Idaho's NewsChannel 7 since it premiered in 1996. He also does daily “Scott Slant” sports segments on SportsRadio 1350/KTIK.
He is a veritable BSU football historian, having researched and written the first complete Bronco football record book in 1983. Tom has a BA in Communication from Boise State and is married to the former Beth Washburn. They have two sons, Mark and Ricky, and enjoy skiing, biking, and the Idaho outdoors in general. He is also involved in a variety of community activities.
