BOISE -- Three people were taken to the hospital after a crash at a downtown Boise intersection Tuesday morning involving a Boise Police patrol car and a SUV.

The accident at 13th and Idaho streets was reported at 9:24 a.m.  Boise Fire and EMS, along with several officers, responded to the crash.

Our photographer Troy Colson says the front end of the police car was badly damaged. It appears the police car struck the passenger side of the SUV.  The impact of the crash caused the SUV to end up in a nearby parking lot.

Jacob Gillaspy was parked in a semi truck at the intersection and said the police car was southbound on 13th Street with its lights flashing, but no siren. He said the police car was going against traffic on the one-way street when it T-boned the SUV with an older couple inside. He says the SUV was westbound on Idaho Street and had a green light when it was hit by the police car.

Boise Police say that traveling south on a northbound one-way street is something normally reserved for emergency responses.

"Investigators do believe the officer was responding with his lights and siren to an urgent call for help from another officer. However, the officer's response and all the circumstances surrounding the crash will be part of the investigation led by Garden City. Our first focus is for the safety of our community and officers," said Boise Deputy Chief William Bones.

Garden City Police are leading the investigation into the crash.  They will recommend if any charges should be filed in this case. Boise Police crash reconstruction experts are also conducting their own investigation.

The Boise Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs is also investigating to determine if police policies, training and procedure were followed by the officer involved in the crash.

We have been told the injuries suffered by the couple and the officer were not life-threatening, and that they have all been treated and released from the hospital.

Boise Police tell us the officer involved in the crash is at home recovering. He will stay on duty during the investigation.
