Blind climber summits Mt. Hood
05:52 PM MDT on Sunday, June 1, 2008
A legally blind mountaineer summitted Mount Hood Sunday.
With the help of his guide dog Rasha and his best friend Diego, 37-year-old John Wimmer has already conquered about a half a dozen mountains across the western United States.
They packed their supplies on Friday.
Wimmer says he may have lost his eyesight when he was five, but he never lost his spirit. His message to others: Go after your dreams.
"People have stereotypes about our abilities and limitations and i would like to abolish those so if this helps thats great ... if it helps motivate someone else that's great too," said Wimmer.

On Monday they head up north to tackle Mount Rainier.
And then this September the three will embark on a 4,000-mile cycling and swimming trek that will take them from Anchorage, Alaska south to Mexico and then east to Key West.
Wimmer and Diego say they will also be using their trips to document the effects of pollution, raising money for UNICEF and raising awareness about climate change.
