Inept pirate burglar becomes Internet sensation
03:11 PM MST on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
LAKEWOOD, Wash. – A would-be burglar who closely resembled a famous Disney pirate and became a sensation on YouTube turned himself in with a dislocated knee after his failed attempt to break into a coffee shop.
The man, who was wearing a long black coat, a green bandana on his head and sporting a goatee, was caught on surveillance video trying to bust into the Perk Central coffee shop at 8904 South Tacoma Way last fall.
The burglar showed his ineptness by trying several times to kick open the door, then he kept putting his hands on the windows, leaving fingerprints behind.
It was something Perk Central owner Robert Jones couldn't resist. He even went so far as to narrate the video and named the crook "Captain Jack Sparrow", after the main character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.
"Look at me put my fingerprints on the window," Jones jokes in his narration.
Near the end of the video, the crook tries a running kick at the door, but hurts his knee. Slow motion replay shows the burglar's knee started to bend the wrong way.
Police say he turned himself in Tuesday night with a dislocated knee, apparently from that failed kick.
The YouTube video has reportedly received over 2,800 hits.
