SEATTLE - Seattle firefighters remain on the scene of a two-alarm fire that burned a warehouse near the West Seattle Bridge early Thursday morning.

Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said the fire broke out about midnight Wednesday in the metal fabricating warehouse at 111. S. Spokane St. near 1st Avenue S.. Flames had broken through the roof when firefighters arrived.

There was no one inside and wind was a problem, so firefighters battled the fire defensively with streams of water from the outside.

"They thought they'd be able to stop the fire before the whole building, but because of the heavy winds and everything they've been unable to stop the fire, said Seattle Fire Chief Gregory Dean.

Firefighters asked Seattle City Light to turn off power along the First Avenue South industrial corridor while they fought the fire.

"They probably had some propane tanks in there because it's a manufacturing fabrication building," Dean said. "We had some exposure to some other tanks but they've (firefighters) got a water line between them so we've got them pretty well secured. The only other hazard we had to deal with tonight was a large power line."

One firefighter had a minor heat-related injury.

The West Seattle Bridge was closed to traffic until shortly after 4 a.m because of heavy smoke in the area.

The fire was controlled at 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators are waiting for daylight to look for the cause of the fire.
