Woman shot 15 years ago dies, ruled homicide

SEATTLE – A man who served time for shooting a woman in the head 15 years ago could potentially face murder charges now that the woman has died.
On the night of Oct. 8, 1993, Seattle Police say 23-year-old Sabrina Sanders was driving her car with a friend. When the pair stopped at a traffic light, a 17-year-old boy behind them, Daymond Holbert, got out of his vehicle, walked up to Sanders, exchanged some words and then opened fire.
Sanders was hit in the head. Her passenger was not hurt.
Holbert was later arrested and convicted of assault. He served 22 months. Police say road rage may have been the cause.
Sanders survived the attack but was left paralyzed. She died in August at the age of 38.
The King County Medical Examiner says because the shooting made Sanders a paraplegic, she had limited movement in her legs. That created circulatory problems which caused a blood clot to form. The clot dislodged and went to her lungs, killing her.
As a result, the medical examiner has ruled Sanders’ death a homicide.
A King County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman says double jeopardy would not apply if prosecutors chose to charge Holbert with homicide. The prosecutor’s office is looking at possibly filing upgraded charges.
Holbert, now 32, is serving a 60-year sentence in Indiana for murder.
