HILLSBORO -- The Hillsboro man who kidnapped and sexually tortured women at his home was sentenced to 108 years in prison Friday.

Vance Roberts showed no emotion as Washington County Judge Timothy Alexander sentenced him.

Roberts told the judge he didn't understand what he was getting punished for. He has claimed all along that he's innocent, even after a jury found him guilty on 27 counts, including rape, sodomy and kidnapping, last June.

But the women he terrorized spoke out in court Friday, confronting their attacker.

“You brutalized me and you terrorized me. You left me mentally and emotionally crippled beyond words and expression. I live in fear and I live in shame," one of the victims said in court, struggling to get the words out as she cried.

During the trial, Roberts told jurors that he brought prostitutes back to his house "many times" but he never forced them to have sex with him or threatened them during sex.

"If she doesn't enjoy it, I'm not going to enjoy it," Roberts said.

He said the two prostitutes he's accused of kidnapping were willing participants who were paid to come to his home to engage in sexual activities. Both women admitted they used to be prostitutes, but said Roberts and his half-brother forced them to do things against their will.

His half-brother, Paul Jackson, also charged in the case, remains at large and Roberts has not helped investigators try and track him down. Investigators said the brothers met the women in Portland in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Then, after Roberts and Jackson were arrested, they jumped bail in 1991.

Roberts' trial was supposed to begin in 1991 but he disappeared for nearly 16 years. He said he lived as a homeless person, panhandling throughout the state of Oregon while he was on the run. He eventually surrendered to police last September at the Washington County Jail.

“You owe a debt to society you should pay with your life,” said Michelle Dierich, the 1988 victim.

Both women said they were happy with the sentence Friday but they said they won’t have closure until Jackson is also arrested, convicted and sentenced.
