ABERDEEN, Wash. - Surveillance video has been released of a van plowing into an Aberdeen 7-Eleven, hitting a toddler and her mother inside the store.
Police are still trying to figure out if there was a medical issue with the driver or if this was an intentional act.
Tuesday night, the 7-Eleven was reopened and repairs were underway. Dark tire marks can are still on the floor.
Police are now sharing the surveillance video from that accident and what they've learned so far. The surveillance footage shows a 2-year-old girl and her mom walking inside the 7-Eleven. While they pick up a few items, you can see a van pull up right outside the front door.
"You can see on the tape he's able to maneuver into the parking lot a very busy parking lot and parks between the lines and comes to a stop," says Captain John Green with Aberdeen Police.
Twenty to 30 seconds later, when mom and daughter are standing right in front of the cash register, all of a sudden the van shifts into drive, flying through the glass doors and plows all the way through to the back wall of the store. The girl and her mother both are hit. They and the 57-year-old male driver were all taken to the hospital.
Police aren't sure if it was deliberate.
"I don't know what was going through his mind. Was he impaired? I don't know and that's really the big question for us," said Cpt. Green.
A similar incident happened last year with the same driver. He told police then he was diabetic and needed his medicine.
His daughter told KING 5 he would never intentionally hurt anyone.
"We have a witness that was standing right next to that vehicle that said the engine was racing, the vehicle wasn't moving, that the driver was working that gear shift, and the next thing he knows that vehicle was put into gear and went right into the store," says Cpt. Green.
Police are now awaiting the results of a blood test. Since the driver had two incidents In the past year, they will likely get a search warrant for his medical records.
