SPOKANE, Wash.-- A Spokane teenager was charged in the deaths of two classmates, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

Preston Maher, 16, faces two counts of vehicular homicide.  He was scheduled to make his first court appearance February 4, 2014.

Maher was the teenager behind the wheel in a deadly October 5, 2013 wreck, which killed two University High School students, according to authorities.

McKenzie Mott, 15, and Josie Freier, 15, died in the wreck.

Witnesses said the trio left a birthday party to take the Ponderosa Jump near Bates and Ponderosa. Court documents described the Ponderosa Jump as a roadway where teenagers drive fast to use it has a jump.

Detectives believe Maher hit a curb, went airborne, and hit a tree on the passenger side. The two girls were sitting in the front and back seat on that side.

Maher was also injured in the wreck, spending time in the intensive care unit.
