PORTLAND -- A Vancouver elementary school was put into lockdown Tuesday morning after reports of shots fired on or near school grounds but as it turned out, the gun was just a toy.
Students told police the toy gun shot out rubber bands and sparks. Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department, confirmed that the gun in question was a toy and no one was in any danger at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School.
Police took the incident very seriously until they could be sure that there was not a real gun on campus. They initially locked down the school and searched the area as a precaution. But as of 9:20 a.m., the school had been re-opened and was deemed safe.
Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School is located at 2921 Falk Road in Vancouver, Wash.
