SPOKANE, Wash. -- Two paperboys stumbled upon a dead body during their morning route through north Spokane, according to deputies.
They found the white man dead near Weipert and Eddy around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A woman tells KREM 2 the body was found in her yard. She says one of the boys rang her bell to let her know, and she then called police.
Deputies say the snow is impeding their investigation, in terms of protecting evidence. They're using blankets to cover the crime scene.
The body has not been identified.
The crime scene is not far from Evergreen Elementary School, and the sheriff’s office has established its command post there. The school is still open, but Principal Jon Iverson says student safety is of utmost importance. He adds administrators will walk through every room before classes begin.
The Mead School District modified the morning bus route, so students didn’t have to walk by the crime tape. Busses will pick up students at Weipert and St. Thomas More Way, Division and Price and at Nazarene Church on County Homes Boulevard.
Any parents who choose not to send their children to school can call the attendance line at 509-465-6484.
