SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- One person was killed and eight others injured in a series of accidents Wednesday morning on an icy stretch of Interstate 90 near Medical Lake.
The worst crash involved a semi. State Troopers said the semi swerved to avoid a truck that had crossed into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes. When it did, the semi hit two cars, eventually smashing through a guard rail. A person in one of the two cars died in the collision.
Investigators said the truck that caused the semi driver to swerve was probably traveling too fast for the icy conditions and the driver lost control. They also said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash, so no criminal charges were expected for the pickup's driver.
The eight people injured in the series of crashes were all taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The wreck blocked the eastbound lanes of I-90 just west of the Four Lakes exit for hours. Lanes were expected to possibly reopen around noon.
The identity of the person killed in the wreck was to be released after the victim's family had been notified.
