SPOKANE, Wash.-- Authorities said a man died after a shootout early Thursday in the Days Inn parking lot on W. 3rd Avenue in downtown Spokane.
They said medics treated the 34-year-old black man around 4:45 a.m. before pronouncing him dead.
Officers with the Spokane Police Department said witnesses called police around 4 a.m. after hearing six to seven gunshots in the area. When officers arrived, they found the victim in the parking lot. They also located a handgun and a pillow case in the same vicinity. It is unclear who the gun belonged to.
Major crime detectives were called to the scene to investigate what led up to the fatal shooting. They planned to take a look at Days Inn surveillance video to see if it revealed any clues. However, they said the camera likely did not cover the parking lot.
By 9 a.m., police say they'd discovered a substance in the parking lot that appears to be methamphetamine. Police blocked off three rooms at the Days Inn while waiting for a search warrant. They also took a red scooter away from the crime scene as evidence.
Detectives said they have no been able to track down any eyewitnesses to the crime. They have not made any arrests and do not have any suspects.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
