SPOKANE, Wash. – Many people can relate to being at a restaurant and using a napkin to write something down. But at Europa Restaurant in downtown Spokane, customers have been leaving letters of love on napkins. And the restaurant has kept them stashed in the same secret vintage drawers in the pub for two decades.
There are hundreds of them: some have sappy messages, others are silly. Some are groups of napkins from couples who’ve been coming to the restaurant since it opened in 1981.
Europa owner, Aja Engels, said the staff never tells customers about it, they let them discover it themselves.
“Nobody said like, ‘Here, write a note and put it in the drawer.’ I think somebody just did it and somebody else found it and it just snowballed and kept going,” Engels said. “I’ve never heard of anything like it.”
