MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- A hot air balloon with 10 people on board landed safely near an Interstate 205 on-ramp Saturday morning, after high winds forced it from two other landing spots, police said.
Police were called to the report of a hot air balloon landing on the freeway just before 8 a.m., according to Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.
"Responding officers found the balloon in a grassy area between the southbound on-ramp from Highway 224 and SE 82nd Avenue, near Milwaukie," Hastings said. He added that before the call, 911 dispatchers had received several reports of a balloon flying very low over the Willamette River.
The balloon and its occupants were safely on the ground when police arrived and no injuries were reported.
The operator said wind conditions prevented him from landing at two sites north of Canby, so he slowly descended until spotting the grassy location to bring it down.
The balloon was deflated and removed from the area about 30 minutes after it landed.
