TILLAMOOK, Ore. - A child found a loaded gun in a Tillamook movie theater during a school field trip Wednesday.

The handgun was found in the Coliseum Theater Wednesday morning during a children's field trip to see "The Hobbit." No one was hurt.

Wright said it was a small, semi-automatic weapon with a round in the chamber and the safety off. Had the student picked up the weapon and squeezed the trigger, Wright said, "it could have been catastrophic."

Instead, the student notified adults. Officers cleared the theater and searched it. Wright says he and his officers don't think that the weapon was brought by a student or that it had been stashed -- leaving the possibility somebody accidentally left it behind.

Police chief Terry Wright said officers were working with the ATF bureau to see if they can track down the owner.

A police officer stayed with the kids during the duration of the movie.
