PORTLAND – Fifteen Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights were canceled Sunday and at least nine were canceled Monday due to crews that were too sick to fly, an airline official told KGW.

“Cold and flu season has hit a lot of [crews] in the last day and a half – particularly Horizon Air crews,” said an Alaska Airlines spokeswoman. “There are a high number of pilots and attendants too sick to fly.”

Alaska Airlines was asking crews to work on their days off and switching flights to bigger planes. But the canceled flights meant that Alaska had to give refunds to around 200 travelers who were not able to get to their intended destinations.

The canceled flights were in addition to 20 flights called off due to mechanical issues or weather. Other airlines were also canceling or delaying flights across the country and at PDX due to storms in the Midwest and on the East Coast.

The spokeswoman said additional flights may be canceled Tuesday because of sickness, and she advised all travelers to check their flights online before going to the airport.
