PORTLAND -- A semi fell over 60 feet from the inbound Interstate 84 on-ramp onto northbound Interstate 5, leaving the driver in critical condition.
The on-ramp is expected to be closed for several hours though the Oregon Department of Transportation was hoping to have one of the two off-ramp lanes open by the end of the morning commute.
Police said the driver collided with another vehicle on the ramp before rolling off the ramp. A guardrail was destroyed. The other driver remained at the scene and was not hurt.
The semi driver was taken to the hospital after Portland Fire Bureau crews spent 30 minutes freeing his trapped legs.
Motorists can detour by taking the southbound ramp to I-5 then taking I-405 northbound back to I-5. Inbound I-84 drivers can also take the Lloyd exit to Grand and continue north on I-5. A third alternative is to take Lombard or Columbia to catch I-5.
