PORTLAND -- Five hatchlings have joined the Oregon Zoo's 18 adult Humboldt penguins in the last month, and one of the chicks emerged from its shell while zoo officials were videotaping.

It was a rare sight because the eggs usually hatch inside the nest box, underneath their parents, said senior bird keeper Gwen Harris.

This hatchling just happened to emerge during a routine check of the egg.

The five chicks were the first to hatch at the zoo in four years, said spokesman Hova Najarian. The public will be able to see them this summer, after they leave their nest boxes and start exploring the newly-remodeled penguinarium.
