AURORA, Ore. – An arguing couple flipped an SUV with three children inside, after the boyfriend grabbed the steering wheel, causing it to crash into a home along Highway 99E just north of Aurora Saturday evening, police said.
At around 8:30 p.m., Jennifer Lemen, 32, of Hubbard was arguing with her boyfriend, Hugh Averette, 33 (pictured), while driving southbound on the highway approaching Pudding River Bridge. Three children were in the backseat, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
The SUV then crossed the northbound lane, after Averette grabbed the steering wheel, and hit a pile of wood, causing the vehicle to flip and crash into a home in the 21000 block of Highway 99E. The SUV came to rest upside down with all three children and both adults hurt, Hastings said.
Two girls, ages 8 and 9, and 5-year-old boy were taken in an ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Lemen was taken to the hospital, where after getting released, she was cited for DUII.
After getting treated at OHSU, Averette was cited for DUII, reckless driving, reckless endangering four people and assault. He was booked in the Marion County Jail.
