PORTLAND - A Bethany man who tried to blow up his home and kill his family was sentenced to 20 years for attempted aggravated murder Wednesday.
Last April, 36-year-old James Speidel cut the gas line at his Bethany home and fed it into the crawl space, making the house extremely flammable.
Speidel's wife smelled the gas, called NW Natural and ran outside with her four kids, ages 3 to 9.
Deputies said there was enough gas built up inside that, had it ignited, would have badly damaged the house and neighboring homes.
Deputies later found Speidel in a field off Germantown Road and arrested him.
Speidel was an employee of Nike and held the title of Business Director for a Nike division called SPARQ, which works directly with athletes and their training regimens.
