SPOKANE, Wash. -- A man reportedly turned himself into police after witnesses say he started a destructive fire at a Spokane apartment complex.
It happened around 1:45 a.m. Saturday at Hilby Station Apartments near South Palouse Highway and 57th.
A white sedan went up in flames, completely destroying the vehicle. The car next to it also suffered damage.
Residents of the complex tell KREM 2 they heard banging noises about 10 minutes before the fire. One witness said he saw the car’s windows smashed in and a man in a black hoodie run from the scene.
The car’s owner says she suspected her ex-boyfriend set the fire and that he turned himself in later that morning. According to jail records, the man she implicated was booked into jail around 4 a.m.
The flames came very close to a tree and could have spread to nearby grass and structures, but crews were able to contain the fire before it grew.
