BEND, Ore. -- Two people were thrown into the water Sunday evening when their inflatable raft went over Lava Island Falls, a treacherous stretch of water on the Deschutes River at Bend.

The Deschutes County sheriff's office, city of Bend and Forest Service emergency personnel responded. The sheriff's office says one person was found clinging to the bank and rescued by firefighters.

The second person was found dead downstream near the Meadow Camp day use area. Both people were wearing floatation devices.

The victim was identified Tuesday as Sharie Smith, 50, also of Portland.

The rafter who survived was identified as Angela Chase, 48, of Portland.

Police were investigating whether the two women may have been drinking before going over the falls.
