RIDGEFIELD, Wash. -- A young woman died after starting to cross a railroad bridge north of Ridgefield and getting struck by an Amtrak train.

She was struck by the train just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and died at the scene, authorities said.

She was trespassing on the railroad bridge when a southbound train engineer spotted her.  The engineer tried to make an emergency stop and blew a whistle, but could not avoid the collision, according to investigators.

Clark County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy said the young woman was on the bridge with a young man as the train approached. The man jumped into the Lewis River to avoid the train, but the woman stayed on the tracks.

The Amtrak passenger train stopped for investigators before continuing the trip to Portland and then Eugene.

Amtrak officials said all passengers were kept on the train.
