BOISE -- Thirty-one refugees became U.S. citizens Saturday in a ceremony in downtown Boise.

The ceremony coincided with other events to mark World Refugee Day.

People flocked to the Grove Plaza to learn more about Boise's refugee population.

"I believe it started in refugee camps in Africa, and since we have such a large refugee population in Boise, we celebrate here on the Grove every year," said Katie Painter with the Idaho Office for Refugees.

More than 800 refugees relocated to Idaho last year from countries all over Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

After living in the U.S. for five years and passing a citizenship test, the refugees are eligible to become naturalized citizens.
