BOISE -- Idaho could soon join a handful of states that allow students, teachers and others to bring guns to class.

A proposal in the Senate State Affairs Committee would allow retired law enforcement officers and people with Idaho's enhanced concealed carry permit to bring firearms to campus, even if the college bans guns on its property.

Enhanced concealed carry permits require completion of an eight-hour training class with a certified instructor.

Guns would be prohibited from dormitories or residence halls, and facilities seating more than 1,000, like stadiums or concert halls. Anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol would also be barred from carrying firearms.

The motion, which comes after two fatal shootings on college campuses last week, will now travel through the House and Senate for approval.
