EL PASO, Texas (AP) — U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes has congratulated challenger Beto O'Rourke for winning the Democratic primary and offered to work with the newcomer to ensure a smooth transition.

The El Paso Democrat offered the promise in a statement Wednesday after congratulating O'Rourke by phone from Washington, D.C.

The congressman has represented El Paso for eight terms and is now chairs the House Intelligence Committee.

O'Rourke ran a social media-savvy campaign and knocked on about 16,000 doors strategically targeted using electoral data. He also had the support of a super PAC that spent $240,000 to remind voters of links between Reyes and a company that hired his children, made campaign contributions and was awarded a $200 million contract.

O'Rourke will likely face little opposition from the GOP in a traditionally Democratic district.
