UNDATED (AP) — Officials say firefighters have made some headway fighting a huge lightning-sparked wildfire burning on the edge of three small Northern California towns.

Firefighters were able to improve their fire lines Monday, aided by a shift in the wind direction and the arrival of more help. The 25-square-mile blaze continues to threaten thousands of homes, as fearful residents huddled at an emergency shelter. Seven homes have been destroyed.

In central Idaho, firefighters dug in to defend the town of Featherville against the raging Trinity Ridge Fire. A little to the north, Idaho's largest wildfire, the Halstead Fire, had burned 143 square miles.

In Washington state, firefighters hope to fully contain a wildfire that burned dozens of homes about 75 miles east of Seattle.
