Oz Blog, Day Two
It’s Day Two of The Blog Formerly Known as "In The Land of Oz," now officially called, "Oz Blog." It’s a shorter, catchier name.
First, a follow-up to yesterday’s entry, as my intrepid wife was able to find
kojac, kujo, cognac… konjac root. She was able to find it under the name glucomannan root ($13 for a month's supply). It’s a fiber supplement that also worked for me as an appetite suppressor (any fiber before dinner should help). However, I learned the hard way to not take all three pills at once, they’re the size of torpedoes.
It was an interesting show, featuring two very different experts and their tips to a longer life. Dr. David Agus recommends most people take statins and avoid anti-oxidants to live longer and avoid disease. Ethnobotanist Chris Kilham (kind of an ironic name) believes the best remedies, treatments, and solutions to longer life are in natural herbs. Since this is the "Oz Blog," and NOT the "Agus Blog," or the "Kilham Blog," I’ll only be using the tips from Dr. Oz, OR the ones he agrees with.
First up, Agus and Oz recommend an Aspirin regimen, which I will likely start after I consult a doctor during my physical on Friday. Also, they say we should automate our lives (eat, sleep, etc… at the same times every day). This is something my wife and I try to do with our young boys, and since I sometimes have the maturity level of a 6-year-old, I’ll give it a try.
Next, Kilham and Oz agreed that we should drink at least 2-3 cups of coffee per day (decaffeinated is fine). They recommended eating an onion per day (which doesn‘t have to be raw, if you care about your social life). They also say we should take curcumin, which is the stuff in turmeric, which is the stuff in curry. I couldn‘t find curcumin at the store. But, I did find turmeric tablets, so that‘s what I‘m taking. Also, now I’m hungry for Indian food.
They recommended NOT sitting more than 6 hours a day. That’s going to be a tough one. So much of my job/life requires sitting and writing, or sitting and driving, or sitting and eating, or sitting and playing with my phone. I wonder if I can stand and drive at the same time… I Googled it, and no I can’t.
Kilham and Oz recommend chanting daily. Also, Kilham showed the good doctor some morning exercises (called the "Five Tibetans") that he says, will add ten years to our lives. You can see my lackluster attempts at both chanting and the "Five Tibetans" below.
Dr. Oz saved the best tip for the last. To lengthen our lives, he wants us to eat chocolate. Done! With as much chocolate as I’ve had, I’m going to live forever! Right? Not quite. He’s not talking about just any chocolate. Oz says it should be 1-2 ounces of dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. I’ll replace my cocoa break (from blog day one) with some dark chocolate, and have to call it good. Hey, it goes down smoother than those fiber torpedoes.

- 2000mg of glucomannan root (dietary fiber/weight loss) ($13 for a month's supply)
- 500mg of turmeric (fights liver damage/Alzheimers/some cancers) ($15 for a two-month's supply)
