Deer, rabbits, other animals found in trailer home

COEUR D'ALENE -- Kootenai County deputies responding to a complaint of an abused horse found more than just an emaciated equine living at one trailer home.

The horse was outside, but Capt. Ben Wolfinger says that inside the double-wide trailer were 22 other animals, including two whitetail deer.

In all, deputies seized 13 dogs, two cats, four guinea pigs, two deer, a horse and a rabbit from the Coeur d'Alene home. And they've asked Kootenai County Prosecutor Bill Douglas to file animal cruelty charges against the couple that lived there.

A teen living in the trailer told officers that the family had taken the deer home when they were found as fawns in the forest. The older deer had been living in the home for about four years, deputies say, and the younger for about a year. Deputies say the home was filthy, covered in feces and urine with no running water and the floor rotting through in places.

The deer were released to the wild, one dog was euthanized and the other animals were being checked out by vets and cared for at foster homes.
