SANDPOINT -- A north Idaho prosecutor says police officers involved in a fatal July shooting of a liquor store thief will not face criminal charges.
Bonner County Prosecutors Phil Robinson says the officers, who have not been identified, followed all proper procedures and were justified in shooting Mark Eric Betts.
Betts, 49, of Hope, was killed July 7 north of Ponderay.
Betts was accused of stealing bottles of whiskey from a store in the Bonner Mall, then moments later was pursued by an officer from the Ponderay Police and the Bonner County Sheriff Department on U.S. Highway 95.
After hitting a police cruiser and coming to a stop, investigators say Betts got out of his vehicle and opened fire on police, who then fired back, killing Betts on the spot.
