Candidates for schools superintendent clash over teaching English
02:00 PM MDT on Thursday, October 26, 2006
BOISE -- Republican candidate for superintendent of schools Tom Luna says special schools should be set up to teach non-English-speaking students, while Democrat Jana Jones says that amounts to segregation.
The two candidates clashed during a televised debate yesterday.
Luna says students could attend separate schools to learn English and then return to a traditional school.
Jones says a better plan is to have each school meet the needs of its students.
Jones, Idaho's chief deputy superintendent of schools, has a doctorate in education.
Luna, a Nampa businessman with no professional background in education, served on his local school board and was an education adviser to the Bush administration.
