Feds, Idaho agrees on plan to get rid of nuke waste

IDAHO FALLS - State and federal agencies have agreed on a $1.3 billion plan to spend about 20 years removing hazardous and radioactive waste from a U.S. Department of Energy landfill in southeastern Idaho.
The federal Department of Energy finalized the proposal, along with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, on Thursday.
The proposal calls for waste clean up on nearly six acres at the Idaho National Laboratory landfill site. The amount of waste to be removed would fill about three Olympic-size swimming pools.
U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge ruled two years ago that Department of Energy had to remove all site waste that has been contaminated with hazardous and radioactive materials, such as plutonium.
A federal appeals court upheld the decision in March.
