Car teeters on the edge

BOISE -- Drivers in Canyon County had a hazardous morning commute.

Cold temperatures overnight and fog combined for slippery conditions on many roads and slide offs were the result.

Idaho State Police responded to one rollover accident, while Nampa Police responded to several in one area with no serious injuries.

Canyon County dispatchers say the fog stretched all the way north of Middleton to Nampa.

But it wasn't fog that made it dangerous for one couple driving on Highway 21 -- it was black ice.

Boise County Sheriff's deputies say the couple’s car slid off the road and almost went into Mores Creek.

The couple said they were simply turning on a curve when they lost control.

Their two-door hatchback was teetering on the edge of the bank and they thought any sudden movement would cause them to go into the icy water.

"I mean it could have been a lot worse than what it was. Luckily everybody's all right," said Trent Troupe.

Trent Troupe and his fiancée Debra Huff were on their way to Idaho City when they hit an icy patch of road and lost control of the vehicle.

"We were hanging on the edge," said Troupe.

The car hung on the edge of the creek for close to one hour. Huff didn't get out of the car until emergency crews arrived and stabilized it.

EMS responded to the crash along with Boise County deputies.

Sgt. John Archer says this is the time of year when motorists need to take extra precautions when driving in hazardous conditions.

"They need to slow down. Drive to the conditions," said Archer. " The moisture is coming up but it's staying at ground level and it's freezing the road."

Huff and Troupe got what they could out of their car before a tow truck drove it away.

"It could have went in. Like I said, it could have been a lot worse than what it was," said Troupe.

The couple was not injured in the incident.

Deputies want to remind drivers about black ice and how dangerous it could be, especially on winding roads like Highway 21.
