Lawmakers want laws regarding Social Security numbers

BOISE -- Republican lawmakers in southwest Idaho say they will consider legislation next year to create potential financial liability for someone who publishes or distributes another person's Social Security number.

The announcement Saturday follows a mailing of fliers sent out late last month by the Idaho Democratic Party throughout the 1st Congressional District that shows the Social Security numbers of U.S. Rep. Bill Sali and his wife.

Sali, a first-term Republican, is locked in a tight race against Democrat Walt Minnick.

Republican State Sen. Brad Little of Emmett says lawmakers have to do something to make people think twice about distributing sensitive information.

Democratic officials say the numbers should have been blacked out on the flier.
