BOISE - John McCain may have the Republican presidential nomination all but locked up – but that isn’t stopping supporters of Representative Ron Paul.

Paul saw his best primary election showing so far Tuesday night in Idaho’s Republican primary.  29,741 Idahoans cast a ballot for Paul – or 24% of the total.  John McCain grabbed the vast majority of ballots with 70%.

Only Montana had a stronger showing for Paul – but with a caucus rather than a primary. Just more than 25% of Montana's delegates went to Paul, after the February caucus.

Paul made a campaign stop in Idaho last month to a packed crowd in Caldwell.

His support in the west has been especially strong – with 15% of Oregonians voting for Paul just last week.

"Dr. Paul's grassroots supporters in Idaho and across the country are doing a tremendous job spreading our message, winning votes and laying a strong foundation for the future," campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said in a prepared statement.

Paul is a fiscal conservative who caught on with many after a series of fiery debate appearances last year.  He is in favor of an isolationist foreign policy and has taken a strong pro-second amendment stance.

Paul tapped into a well of Internet funding – raising more than $30 million.
