Syvanna Elliot, 17, of Nampa, holds up her fire-damaged prom dress. Her prom is Saturday and now she will have to find another dress.
NAMPA - A Nampa family is salvaging what they can after police say a teenager set their house on fire.
The house is located on 4400 block of Airport Road in Nampa.
The fire started around 7 p.m. Thursday while the Elliot family was home. It consumed most of the house and personal items, including a prom dress their daughter was looking forward to wearing the tomorrow.
"This is my mom and dad’s room, it's totally gone. There's holes in the floor that burned through. Our roof burned through," said Chris Garrett, oldest son. "Pretty much the half of this whole house is toasted and the other half is smoke damage."
The owner of the home, John Elliott, now needs a flashlight to see what he can salvage.
"All of our family pictures were under the bed and coats," said Elliot.
Police say after conducting a joint investigation, they found a 17-year-old girl was responsible for the fire.
Syvanna Elliot, 17, says the suspect is a friend and doesn't understand why this happened.
John Elliot says there were two fires at the home about 30 minutes apart. The first one was in the garage.
"I was out here talking to the fire marshal still," he said.
And then the house started burning. Now, the Elliots are salvaging what they can.
"The sad thing is it's things you can never replace," said Kerry Elliot, homeowner.
Including Syvanna's prom dress that was damaged in the fire.
"The firemen did great job. They brought the dress out. They tried to salvage it as best they could," said Kerry Elliot.
"And in the back it has black on it," said Syvanna.
Syvanna was supposed to go prom on Saturday, but now she doesn't know if she is going to make it.
John and his family still can't believe this happened.
"I don't know what to do!" said John Elliot.
The teenage girl police arrested has been released into the custody of her parents.
Police say the only motivation they can find behind the arson is property damage. Criminal charges are still pending.
Nampa Fire investigators have not released the cause of fire.
Since we first aired this story on NewsChannel 7 and KTVB.COM there has been an outpouring of support from the community.
Syvanna has received several offers to help her get a new prom dress. And the family now says it looks like she will get to attend the prom afterall.
