A second grader suffered a leg injury after being bit by a rottweiler while walking in this Star neighborhood.

STAR - Police and animal control officials are investigating a dog attack in Star Friday morning.

An Ada County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson says two second graders were walking on South Sunlight Place near State Street just after 8:30 a.m. when a dog came out of a yard and attacked one of the boys.

The child suffered a “substantial” leg injury – and family members took him to a local hospital.

"The likelihood is that the owner's would be charged under Star's dangerous dogs ordinance," Dr. Jeff Rosenthal with the Idaho Humane Society said. "That's a process that takes place in the court system. Usually the dog remains impounded at the Humane Society until the case is settled."

Charges have not yet been filed, but are pending according to Ada County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Andrea Dearden.

Rosenthal confirms that the animal is a male neutered rottweiler.

The same animal was involved in a case in March 2007, according to Rosenthal. The dog bit a neighbor - who later decided not to press charges. The owners paid a fine and the dog was released back to its owners after a 10-day quarantine.

Several dog attacks have been reported this week in the area.

"It's spring, and the weather's better," Rosenthal said. "We have a lot of wind - which causes gates to come open and dogs get lose. We see more problems in good weather than in the winter time. It's been a bad week for it."
