Proposal would require parental consent for abortions in Idaho

BOISE -- A measure to require minors to get a parent's consent before they have an abortion will likely go before the Idaho Senate's State Affairs Committee Friday. The bill from Representative Bill Sali would allow minors to have an abortion without a parent's consent if there is a medical emergency or if the pregnancy was a result of a sexual assault. Previous parental-consent laws passed by the Legislature have been overturned by federal judges. But Sali says he hopes this proposal, modeled after Arizona's court-tested law, will succeed where others failed. Planned Parenthood of Idaho says they will oppose any bill that requires parental consent for an abortion.
