Law aimed at hanging on to Albertsons may be repealed

05:56 PM MDT on Monday, March 17, 2008

Associated Press

BOISE - Lawmakers began efforts to repeal a failed law once aimed at keeping Albertson's Inc. in Idaho.

There was no opposition to introducing the repeal Monday in the House Revenue and Taxation Committee.

In 2005, the effort to provide the grocery chain with tax credits, jobs credits and property tax breaks was controversial.

Since then, however, Albertsons was sold to Minnesota-based Supervalu -- and nobody took advantage of the law.

This session, the House has already passed separate property tax breaks meant to lure a uranium enrichment facility.

Representative Dennis Lake, the tax committee chairman, says the new bill -- now in the Senate -- offers rewards similar to the Albertson's bill to companies willing to invest in Idaho.
