Bikers will soon make a Meridian bar not just the place they hang out between rides - but a place to worship Christ.
MERIDIAN - They are not your traditional worshippers - but a group of motorcyclists are getting all revved up over a new Meridian church. A church – in a bar.
The Busted Shovel Bar and Grill in Meridian may not look anything like a place of worship, but in just a few weeks, that's exactly what it will be: a church.
"I just feel like God loves bikers," biker/preacher Jim Atkins said.
Atkins says that’s why he is founding the Common Ground Biker Church.
"The stereotypical biker is from way back, you know they're all thugs and stuff like that,” Atkins said. “It's totally different now. There are some of the nicest people you'll ever want to meet riding a motorcycle.”
The church will start services the first Sunday in April, with a congregation mainly composed of bikers. He says the idea is not to bring bikers to church, but a church to the bikers.
“We want to go where the bikers are instead of trying to get them to come to our local church that probably isn't geared for them ,” Atkins said.
To some the idea may seem out of the ordinary, but according to some bikers hanging out in the bar --- the idea is already catching on.
“God changes us from the inside out, not from the outside in and that's very important because a lot of people think that they have to change to go the church,” church member Rob Allen said. "We believe that we are the church, not the building.”
The first service is set to take off Sunday April 6th at 9 a.m.
No alcohol or smoking will be allowed during services.
