EAGLE - A new proposal to connect Interstate 84 to Highway 16 would mean a big change for those who live in the area.

For some it could mean commerce opportunities, for others, a possible end to their peaceful rural setting.

The project began with an environmental study – so far that’s the only phase to receive funding.

But the Idaho Transportation Department and residents know, the new highway will eventually be built.

Community members gathered together to take a look at the new proposed highway, known as Idaho 16 Tuesday night

It's the beginning phase of the project -- that would connect Interstate 84 between the proposed Ten Mile Interchange and Garrity Boulevard.

"Far off into the future the Idaho 16 project is to establish another north south corridor and another entrance to the freeway,” Idaho Transportation Department spokesperson Gwen Smith said.

ITD is taking public comment now to stay ahead of the game.

"We take the environmental study and we hold it until we have money because this is a long process, because if money falls in your lap you want to be ready,” Smith said.

Potential concept locations start at McDermott Road.  It goes North to South from the Interstate near Overland -- until it merges with Highway 16 -- making it easier and quicker for travelers headed to Emmett.

Smith says ideas for the highway span east to west a half mile either way.

Paul Hoyer lives near the proposed intersection of McDermott Road and Highway 20-26, on Serenity street.

"Serinity will not be quite so serene any more," Hoyer said. "My concerns are noise, traffic, access, the time it's going to take, it could be 10 years by the time this is done."

There is no start date right now for the project, but residents like Hoyer know getting opinions -- and plans on paper right now will go a long way in determining where the highway will be built- when the money is available.

The proposed corridor will be around six and half miles long and included meridian, Eagle, Ada County, Nampa, Canyon County and the City of Star.
