06:51 PM MDT on Saturday, June 7, 2008
BOISE -- The after a five week wait, the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the prestigious Triple Crown has come to an end in New York.
Millions worldwide watched as Big Brown, this year's winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, tried to make history as the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.
Thousands of local race fans gathered at Les Bois Park Saturday to watch the historic race.
The atmosphere could only be described as madness and Big Brown failed to win the Belmont – losing to Da' Tara, a 38-to-1 longshot.
The track opened at 1:30 p.m. and since then, patrons both young and old, have come to watch the nine races going on today - including the Belmont.
For some it was their first time at the track and others had been here many times before.
Either way there was no shortage of local support for a race happening across the country.
"Really busy, lots of people, lots of excitement, some drinking and having fun, we've got live horse races here, we've got numerous tracks on the TV, and then the Triple Crown of course," said Shawn Lucas, horse racing fan.
It was an extremely busy day at the track and one of their busiest days of the year.
Les Bois Park reports nearly 25,000 fans came through the turnstiles, which means lots of money flowing into the local economy.More Local News
